Hot Tub Safety for Children

Hot tubs are a great way to relieve muscle aches and unwind after a long day. They are also fun for your whole family, young and old! But before you let your little ones spend time in the hot tub, take some time to make sure they know how to use it properly to keep them safe.

Ask yourself these three questions before allowing your children to soak in a hot tub with you:

1. Is my child tall enough to use the hot tub?

If your child can’t stand in the center of your hot tub and still have his or her head completely above the water, they’re too small to soak in the spa. Even if your child can swim, they could overheat, lose consciousness, and drown. It’s important to supervise children at all times when spending time near the hot tub to reduce the risk of drowning.

2. Is my child careful around the hot tub?

According to a study by the American Journal for Preventative Medicine, 73 percent of hot tub and spa injuries occur in patients under 17 years old. Most of the injuries are credited to slip and falls, causing lower extremity and head injuries. Children under 16 years old are three times more likely to suffer a head injury than other age groups.

Make sure your child knows how to properly enter and exit the hot tub, holding handrails and not running on the deck surrounding the spa. It’s also important to make sure children aren’t jumping into the shallow hot tub, which can cause lower body injuries.

Is my child overheating in the hot tub?

Overheating can happen to anyone who spends too much time soaking in a hot tub, but children are especially susceptible to this risk due to their small bodies. Make sure your child doesn’t spend more than 10-15 minutes in the hot tub with you, and never set the water temperature above 104oF.
